Produce Markets

After many months of peppers and eggplant in the winter season, I am very much enjoying the fruit and vegetable variety that comes with the advent of spring. 2 kilos of cherries for 5 ytl (about $3.50). Beautiful tomatoes for about 1 ytl per kilo. Giant artichokes hearts that are prepared by eager salesmen. Watermelon at .90 kurus a kilo. Whatever is in season is cheap and delicious and always ripe enough to eat that day. Strawberry season was amazing. I've also been introduced to erik by the kids--a hard, green, sour plum which they eat by the kilo (pictured below).

The other fun thing about the markets is that you never know what non-food items will also be sold. Sometimes strawberries and pantyhose. Sometimes apples and shoes or toys or household appliances.

Hello,
I have been following your great blog for a while now, keep it up! I am also an expat living in Istanbul and it is fun to read about other peoples adventures. I am preparing to go to Egypt in a couple weeks and was wondering how you found your guide and if you would you recommend him.

Ben-

I loved my guide. He is working for a different company now though and I'm not sure about the company. I'm going to Ankara on tuesday for the rest of the week and then am actually going home for the summer, but if you have any questions feel free to ask. What are you doing in Istanbul?
